Hard to believe, but the Murray Catalogue, now known as "Murray`s Card Values", is celebrating its 50th edition. Murray Cards was once the World`s largest dealer in tobacco and trade cards, with a retail shop in Watford Way, Hendon, London, that was reputed to contain 25,000,000 cards, not counting their range of Nostalgia Reprints and their huge stock of card-safe albums and leaves.
If you are just starting to collect cards this makes a really valuable first purchase. It splits the cards into three sections, UK tobacco, Overseas Tobacco, (including many Chinese and Oriental sets), and Trade or commercially sold issues. It also lists cards of each issuer in an easy to follow form, and gives you the number of cards in the set, whether there are first and second series, or more, the title of the cards, the date of issue, and current values for odds (single cards) or full sets. If you use this information you have a really good friend to help you avoid buying over priced cards, or marriages where a "set" is actually parts made up from the first and second series. For this latest edition it features many NEW SERIES - cards from Butterworths, Sainsburys, etc - and also many sets that have not been previously listed. There are also several NEW advertisers, including auction houses, and NEW sections on the Cartophilic Society, your hosts today.
And its still only £10 plus postage of £2.50 within the UK.
